Healthy Oats Chila / Savory Oats Pancake

When it comes to some healthy breakfast, Oats definitely cross our minds. But what to make with oats? Most of the recipes that use oats are sweet in taste. But being an Indian, I really need something spicy to start my day with...:)...

Oats chila is one of my family's favorite weekend breakfast. A lot of variations are possible with this recipe. Like here I am using carrots, but it can be replaced with any of the vegetable of your liking like beet root, potato, bottle gourd. Choices are enormous. A very quick recipe that will surely be loved by all....

Oats Pancake

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups of grated carrot
  • 100gm finely chopped cabbage
  • 1 cup coarsely grounded rolled oats
  • 1 cup besan
  • 1/4 cup chopped corriander
  • 2-3 chopped green chilies
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp carom seeds
  • a pinch of asafeotida
  • salt to taste.
  • oil for cooking
  • 2 1/4 cups of water
Method
  1. Mix all the ingredients together except oil and make a batter that is neither thick nor too flowing. I have mentioned approximate quantity of water according to my observation. You might need a little more or less. Please refer the pic below for batter consistency.
  2. Let this batter stand for 10-15 mins to let oats absorb the water.
  3. Heat a skillet or a pan. Grease it.
  4. When its hot enough, reduce the heat to minimum.
  5. Now pour approximately 2 ladles of batter in the center, and spread it outwards using the back side of the ladle, to form approximately 8 inch diameter circle.
  6. Let it cook on low heat until the top side of it turns dry as shown in picture.  Drizzle few drop of oil on it.
  7. Now carefully flip it and cook it on high for few mins. You can flip again until its done completely.
  8. Serve hot with your choice of dip.
Tips:
  1. This batter generally yields 8 chilas of 8 inch diameter. But varies according to the thickness. For crisp chilas, try to spread thin layer and press it with spatula while cooking.
  2. This batter has good binding, but still if it breaks while flipping, it could be because of two reasons. Either it is not yet cooked enough to flip or it is too thin..:)
